The term delta is used to describe the area of land where a river empties into the ocean or the sea. The soil that is carried down the river builds up where it flows into another body of water, forming a land mass.
The Ganges Delta - Sundarbans stretches some 220 miles across India and Bangladesh. The Ganges empties into the Bay of Bengal, with more than two-thirds of it in Bangladesh. It covers 23,000 square miles.
