Hampi, currently situated in Northern Karnataka, was the former capital of the Vijayanagara Empire. Krishnadevaraya (1509-1529), belonged to the Tuluva segment, ruled in Vijayanagar. Famous Virupaksha temple and the Krishnaswamy temple are attributed to him. It is speculated that the world famous Vijaya Vittala temple and the Hajara Rama temple were also built by Krishnadevaraya.
